Maggie Stuckey – widely published author, ghostwriter, book doctor, and editor—draws on her long career in publishing to unwrap the mysteries of what makes a great proposal and why it is so critical in this free workshop on October 14th from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library’s Main Meeting Room.

Anyone thinking of writing a nonfiction book and hoping to see it published by a traditional publishing house (i.e., not a self-publisher or e-book platform), wait! Your potential publishers want to see a good proposal – not the whole manuscript.

Portland author Maggie Stuckey will unlock the mysteries of the nonfiction book proposal at a special workshop at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library on Saturday, October 14th from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Maggie knows the publishing world and its quirks from years of firsthand experience. She is the author of 11 books under her own name, and over 40 others as ghostwriter or collaborator; all are nonfiction and most were published by one of the big-name New York houses. Before switching to writing full-time, she worked as a manuscript editor in New York and later as a consulting editor to some of those same publishers. She has seen (and edited and rewritten) proposals from the full spectrum: the good, the bad, and the ugly. In this workshop, she will explain the purpose of the proposal, describe the in-house reviewing process, and then outline the standard format with details of each element of the proposal including all the necessary nuts and bolts.

About Maggie Stuckey: Maggie Stuckey is a widely published author and consulting editor, with more than 40 years' experience in book publishing. She is the author of eleven nonfiction books for adults, most of them in the gardening and cooking categories. As a ghostwriter, she has written, co-written, or developed more than forty books; these are all in the "Business" category, published by major New York houses, and several are bestsellers. This wide exposure has given Maggie an unusually broad insight into the inner workings of the book publishing industry.
