BREAKING: Lynn MA Residents have started an overnight occupation of Waterfront development site. 348 Luxury Units & 0 Affordable Units are planned for the site. Lynn residents are organizing to demand Development Without Displacement in their community, a minimum of 20% affordable units in all development and homes for all Lynn residents. Follow @LynnUnitedMA on Facebook & Twitter.

“Unaffordable rent is a huge problem in Lynn,” notes a petition protest organizers presented tonight. “But Lynn Redevelopment, LLC is planning to build 348 luxury apartments on the Lynnway for people from other areas, with not a single one affordable to working class, low- to moderate-income Lynn residents. We demand changes so that the project benefits current Lynn residents too.”

In Lynn, renters question why public resources are being used for a project that will produce profits for the developer but do nothing to address the city’s housing crisis. They note the developer of the luxury apartments is in the process of getting a large tax break from the city, is benefiting from state infrastructure funds, and is being allowed to violate the city’s Municipal Harbor Plan.

They see this is part of a nationwide problem of development prioritizing private profit and directly or indirectly causing displacement. In addition to pressing for affordable housing in the waterfront project, protesters in Lynn supports nationwide demands including rent control, eviction protections, and full funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
