Digital Accessibility
The City of Corvallis is working to meet the federal government’s new ADA digital accessibility requirements. These rules ensure that people with disabilities can access online services, documents, videos, and public meetings.
What We’re Doing
- Designing and launching a new, modern website that meets WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, including features such as providing text alternatives for non-text content, ensuring content is navigable via keyboard, video captioning, and accommodating users with various disabilities, including those with cognitive and motor challenges. We expect to launch this new website in late 2026.
- Implementing staff training and workflows to begin creating accessible documents by April 2026.
- Publishing internal accessibility tutorials and style guides for staff.
- Converting old PDFs and forms into accessible web pages.
- Reviewing captions on public meeting recordings.
- Ensuring social media and graphics meet accessibility guidelines.
- Reviewing and updating the City’s contracting process to ensure all new contracts for web tools, digital services, forms, meeting systems, document platforms, and video hosting must show compliance with current accessibility requirements, as well as a roadmap for future accessibility improvements that may be coming down the pipeline.
Why This Matters
Accessibility is about equity. It ensures that all community members — including people who use screen readers, rely on captions, or need accessible documents — can fully participate in their local government.
Timeline for Implementation
Our organization-wide timeline to make these vital accessibility improvements will be finalized by April 2026. Implementing specific workflows, contracts, and document remediation will stretch into 2026 and beyond based on current resources and staff capacity.
