A free, in-person cooking demo with local chefs followed by an informal discussion and cookbook recommendations at the Corvallis Community Center (C3). Brought to you by Parks and Recreation, Corvallis Benton-County Library and the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition. Ages 12+.

Thursday, April 25, 5–6:30pm: Cooks and Books: Wild Fermentation with Hailey Kimchi
Join us for a free, in-person cooking demonstration and showcase of cookbooks at C3! This month’s theme is kimchi featuring seasonal spring vegetables, with food scientist &nutritionist Hailey Kimchi. Learn about traditional fermentation, make a giant batch of kimchi together, and jar them for everyone to take home. Kimchi and kombucha samples will be served.

Hailey Kimchi is a flavor-obsessed food scientist and nutritionist who builds community through her creative, hyperlocal ferments and pastries. She is a recent graduate from OSU with an M.S. in Food Science, currently pursuing her registered dietitian credential, and a member of the Wild Yeast Bakery crew.

 

Thursday, June 27, 5–6:30pm: Cooking Outdoors in the Summer with Lorraine Anderson
Cooking outdoors in the summer using only the energy of sunshine is fun, easy, and safe. It keeps your kitchen cool—and the fuel is free and zero-emission! Join Lorraine Anderson, author of Cooking with Sunshine and Slow Cook Solar, to learn how you can harness solar energy to cook root vegetables and grains that can provide the base for a variety of chilled soups and substantial salads. Lorraine will share her recipes for Adobo Potato Salad, Chilled Beet and Cucumber Soup, and Quinoa Tabouli.

About Lorraine Anderson: Lorraine Anderson has been cooking with sunshine for more than thirty years. A free-lance writer and editor, she has edited dozens of books encouraging Earth consciousness, including Sisters of the Earth and Earth & Eros. Her most recent book, Slow Cook Solar: Sun-Baked Summer Meals Good for People and Planet, aims to make the joy of solar cooking accessible to a wide audience.
