Several Cougar Sightings Reported within City Limits
Since Thursday, July 31st, the Corvallis Police Department has received several reports of cougar sightings in residential neighborhoods, three of which have been confirmed by either photo or video footage.
The confirmed sightings have been near the Whitham Hill Natural Area, between NW Walnut Blvd and Circle Blvd.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife and defined in Oregon statute 498.166, a cougar is deemed dangerous when it’s:
- Seen repeatedly during daylight hours near homes or other permanent structures.
- Charging, false charging, growling, teeth popping, snarling or stalking.
- Attacking pets or domestic animals.

If you see a cougar in a residential neighborhood, Corvallis Police Department strongly suggests reporting that sighting to dispatch at 541-766-6911 or to ODFW at 541-757-4186.
This is an evolving situation. All reported sightings are shared with ODFW to help pinpoint the cougar’s location and assist with public safety messaging. If you see the cougar and feel you are in immediate danger, please call 911.
